Fuel manufacturers and designers of petroleum products based on petroleum combustion, from small kerosene heaters to automobiles, super jetliners and diesel locomotives, need accurate, up-to-date property information to make the most efficient use of a limited resource, petroleum products.
Northrop Grumman delivers leading-edge products and services with superior quality and value to customers in energy and environmental markets. The company’s Petroleum Products Surveys (PPS) offer significant value to fuel manufacturers and to designers of end-use equipment.
The surveys contain compilations of the physical and chemical properties of fuels marketed throughout the United States. The reports list trends of typical fuels and their selected properties over the last 15 years, and contain summary tables comparing current and previous year’s average, minimum and maximum values.
These surveys have been conducted for over 70 years. Previously funded by American Petroleum Institute (API) and various government agencies, they are presently funded solely through subscriptions.
Samples of diesel fuel, aviation fuel, and heating oils are obtained at refineries, and samples of motor gasolines are obtained at participating retail outlets across the United States. Physical and chemical properties of these samples are determined according to standardized ASTM procedures, enabling consistent comparison of petroleum property variations from survey to survey. After the sample test results are compiled and analyzed, the surveys are published and distributed.
Northrop Grumman’s PPS reports reflect current developments in the petroleum industry. The most complete and accurate property information available is contained in five fuel surveys published annually:
